Spotlight on Leon Creek Greenway: A Cyclist’s Paradise

One of San Antonio’s most beloved trails is the Leon Creek Greenway. Stretching about 25 miles, it winds through wooded areas, peaceful parks, and even passes near some bustling shopping areas for a quick pit stop if you need it.

  • Trail difficulty: Easy to moderate (paved), with optional off-path mountain biking sections.
  • Family-friendly: Yes! Great for families, walkers, and casual riders.
  • Parking: Plenty of trailheads with free parking available.

My family and I personally love this trail — you’ll often spot deer and other wildlife along the way! Plus, some cool natural features like rock formations and treetop views make it easy to take a scenic break.

Bonus for mountain bikers: Just off the main paved trail, you’ll find several side trails with more rugged, adventurous terrain.

Shopping Local: Meet Britton’s Bicycle Shop

A great ride starts with the right gear and expert advice — and that’s where Britton’s Bicycle Shop comes in.

When our family moved to San Antonio with the military, Brittons was one of the first bike shops we visited after Googling local bike shops in the area. Located in North Central San Antonio, they’ve been a beloved part of the San Antonio cycling community for 30+ years and everyone that works there is so approachable and knowledgable. Within the span of our first visit, we had intel on great places to ride, purchased some new accessories to round out our trail gear and I got set up a for a dynamic fitting to help make my ride more comfortable. If you have never had a dynamic fitting before – I HIGHLY recommend getting one! Their certified bike fitters will hook you up to a sophisticated video-monitored software system that gives real-time feedback on bike adjustments, and can also provide a blueprint to help them determine your ideal bicycle if you’re looking to get a new one.

Future Biking Excitement: The Great Springs Project

Looking ahead, San Antonio cyclists have something incredible to look forward to — the Great Springs Project. This ambitious plan will eventually create a 100-mile trail network linking San Antonio to Austin by 2036, connecting existing trails like the Salado Creek Greenway with brand-new routes.

It’s an exciting glimpse into the future of cycling in Central Texas — and a huge boost for long-distance riders!
