Family Fun Around JBSA: Parks, Pools, and Summer Spots

Getting settled around Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) during the summer months comes with one immediate realization:

It is hot.

But the upside is that San Antonio offers a wide range of ways to get out, explore, and enjoy the area, even in the middle of a Texas summer.

Whether you are newly stationed at JBSA or just looking to make the most of your time here, here are some practical, go-to options to help you get out of the house and experience the area.

Parks and Outdoor Spaces Near JBSA

Having access to outdoor space is important, even if it means adjusting your schedule to early mornings or evenings.

Some widely used parks around the JBSA areas include:

  • Phil Hardberger Park, a large and well-maintained park with shaded trails and open space
  • McAllister Park, popular for walking, running, and biking with an extensive trail system
  • Eisenhower Park, which offers elevation and scenic views that feel a little different from other parts of San Antonio
  • Hemisfair Park(https://hemisfair.org/) in downtown San Antonio, a great option if you are heading into the city, with open green space, playgrounds, and a splash pad that is especially popular in the summer

Many of these parks are within a reasonable drive of JBSA locations and give you a break from being indoors.

Pro tip: In the summer, plan around the heat. Early morning and evening visits tend to be much more comfortable.

Pools and Ways to Cool Off

Pools quickly become part of the routine during a San Antonio summer.

Depending on your setup, you may have access to:

  • On-base pools at JBSA facilities
  • Community pools
  • City-operated pools and splash pads

If you are looking for more of a full-day experience, there are also larger attractions:

Both are paid options, but they can easily turn into a fun-filled all-day activity.

If you are open to a short drive, New Braunfels offers:

Floating the river is one of those classic Texas summer experiences and is worth trying at least once.

A Unique San Antonio Experience

One spot that is truly unique to San Antonio is Morgan’s Wonderland(https://morganswonderland.org/).

It is a 25-acre theme park designed to be fully accessible for individuals of all ages and abilities. The park includes a wide range of rides, playgrounds, and attractions that are designed so that people with and without special needs can enjoy them together.

Morgan’s Wonderland is often described as an ultra-accessible park, and it is one of those places that tends to leave a lasting impression on families who visit.

While much of the park is outdoors, there are shaded areas and features designed to make it more comfortable, even during warmer months.

Admission policies can vary, but the park is known for offering free admission to guests with special needs, with general admission available for others. It’s a great option to keep in mind if you are looking for something different from a typical theme park experience.

Indoor and Heat-Friendly Activities

There will be days when it is simply too hot to be outside for long, and having indoor options makes a big difference.

Some popular options around San Antonio include:

  • Indoor mini golf, including a monster-themed course that is fun but not overly intense
  • Trampoline parks
  • Indoor playgrounds
  • Large “Eatertainment” venues like Pinstack, Main Event, Andretti Indoor Karting and Games, Dave and Busters and Incredible Pizza offer bowling, arcade games, and laser tag, bumper cars and go-kart racing in one convenient place
  • Indoor skydiving at iFLY

If you want to stay active while staying cool, there are plenty of options. Just keep in mind that most of these are paid activities.

Easy Ways to Get Out of the House Without Overthinking It

One of the more practical adjustments after arriving in San Antonio is simply figuring out your go-to spots.

JBSA is spread out across the city, so what is convenient near Lackland may not be practical for someone near Randolph or Fort Sam. Because of that, it is less helpful to chase specific recommendations and more helpful to focus on what is near you.

My best advice is to simply get out and explore.

It is easy to default to big chains because they are familiar, especially during a move, but San Antonio has a wide range of locally owned restaurants, and trying new places is one of the easiest ways to get to know the area.

You could realistically try a new spot every time you go out and still not get through all the options before your next PCS.

A few things that tend to work well:

  • Look for places close to home or base that are easy to revisit
  • If you want to try to stay outside, prioritize covered patios since shade matters more than you might expect
  • Do not overlook smaller, less obvious spots. Sometimes the taco stand at a gas station ends up being one of the best meals you will have (We have a local tamale guy at our neighborhood gas station that my kids BEG me to buy tamales from whenever we see him out with his sign and cooler.)

You do not need a perfect list, just a willingness to try a few places and see what sticks.

Adjusting to a San Antonio Summer

If you are new to the area, the biggest adjustment is not finding things to do, it is learning how to do them differently.

A few things that help:

  • Shift outdoor activities earlier or later in the day
  • Stay consistent with hydration
  • Look for shaded or covered spaces
  • Keep indoor backup plans

Once you adjust your routine, it becomes much easier to enjoy what the area has to offer.

Getting Familiar With the Area

One of the most valuable things you can do after arriving at JBSA is simply start exploring.

  • Try a new park
  • Visit a different part of the city
  • Test out a few go-to spots

You do not have to figure it all out at once, but small steps help you feel more settled much faster.

The Bottom Line

Summer around JBSA looks a little different than it might in other parts of the country, but there is no shortage of ways to stay active and get out of the house.

The key is:

  • Knowing your options
  • Adjusting your routine
  • Finding a few reliable go-to spots

Once you do that, it becomes much easier to enjoy your time here.
